About

A tool for the person who has to apply

Beacon exists because strong candidates get passed over for weak applications every day, and the people who need help the most are often the ones least likely to get it. Software can close some of that gap, and language models are the first technology that genuinely can.

Why we built it

Strong people get passed over for weak applications

Maya spent six years in technical recruiting and candidate coaching, first at a hiring agency and then leading a talent team. She watched strong engineers and marketers and operators get screened out because their resume did not speak to the role, or their cover letter was a template, or they walked into interviews unprepared for questions their experience could have answered confidently.

The fix was not complicated, it just took time: reading the job post carefully, rewriting the resume to lead with what this role was actually asking for, and preparing specific answers from real experience. The candidates who got that coaching moved forward. Most candidates never got it.

Devin had spent eight years building natural-language systems, most recently retrieval and summarization over long documents. Beacon is the two of those put together: the honest coaching a good recruiter would give, at a cost a job seeker will actually pay, in a form they can act on the same afternoon.

We are careful about what we claim. Beacon will not lie on your resume. It tailors using your real experience and does not invent qualifications you do not have. An honest application you can defend in the room is more valuable than an impressive one you cannot.

The team

9 people, working on this full time

Five of them are below. Everyone is based in the United States and nobody here has a second job. Beacon is what we do.

Maya Ellison

Co-founder and CEO

San Francisco, CA

Spent six years in technical recruiting and candidate coaching, first at a hiring agency and then leading a talent team, where she watched strong people get passed over for weak applications. Beacon is the tool she wanted to hand every one of them.

Devin Rao

Co-founder and CTO

San Francisco, CA

Built natural-language systems for eight years, most recently retrieval and summarization over long documents. He owns the tailoring pipeline, the model routing layer and the honesty checks that keep a tailored resume grounded in what you actually did.

Sofia Marchetti

Head of Career Content

San Francisco, CA

A certified resume writer and former university career advisor. She owns what strong looks like: how a bullet should read, what interviewers behind a role actually ask, and where a tailored line crosses from honest into invented.

Theo Brennan

Founding Engineer

Austin, TX

Works on the parts nobody sees: resume parsing that survives a two-column PDF, matching that lines a skill up with the phrase in the job post, and the queue that keeps a full tailoring pass inside one request.

Nina Okafor

Design

Brooklyn, NY

Designs the match-and-tailor screen, which is the whole product. Her rule: a job seeker should see how they fit a role within four seconds of the page loading, and never feel judged by it.

The people and the investors named on this page are illustrative. Beacon is a demonstration company and we would rather say so plainly than have you find out later. Everything about the product is real: the tailoring engine, the model routing, and the free tier all work exactly as described.
